Transplantation
Kidney transplantation is the procedure of
placing a healthy kidney from one person into another person. People with kidney
damage or end-stage renal disease are candidates for kidney transplants. The
procedure restores normal kidney function, freeing patients from dialysis. After
the transplant, doctors follow the patient to make sure the body doesn't reject
the kidney; drugs help prevent rejection. A special diet will be prescribed,
too.
End-Stage Renal Disease:
Choosing a Treatment That's Right for You contains a chapter on kidney
transplantation that provides additional information.
